Winner of the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 International engine of the year award in the 1.0-litre to 1.4-litre category, Peugeot PureTech is advanced 3-cylinder petrol engine technology that offers a drive and performance normally associated with much bigger engines but with significantly improved fuel consumption and CO2 emissions*.

Put simply, a 1.2 PureTech engine gives you the power and performance of a 1.6 litre engine, but the efficiency of a smaller engine.

It’s a product of Peugeot’s 100 years of intelligent, innovative engineering and combines reduced weight materials with the efficiency of applying direct fuel injection to three cylinders.

On some versions we’ve even added Turbo power, optimising torque at all revs and delivering an engine with a unique personality and one which is ultimately designed to give you maximum driving pleasure and responsiveness, at any speed, for less.

And now for the science bit...

Why are 3 cylinders better than 4?

  • Increases fuel efficiency (one cylinder less of fuel to burn)
  • Less friction (one less cylinder results in a lower surface area, saving fuel)
  • Lighter weight (meaning less fuel has to be burnt to move the vehicle)

In addition to this an aluminium cast-iron-lined block (for quicker engine warm up), the use of low friction materials and a revised cooling system maximise efficiency, reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

Engine output and Driving Experience

PureTech 3-cylinder petrol engines are designed to be compact and efficient whilst delivering big engine drive and performance. Direct fuel injection, light-weight materials and, in some instances, turbo charging combine to deliver power and torque.

To meet requirements for reduced emissions of pollutants, PEUGEOT has developed a new family of 3-cylinder PureTech petrol engines. These engines have been developed in line with Peugeot's engine down-sizing strategy.

As a result, the 3-cylinder PureTech engine is lighter and more compact than a 4-cylinder engine of the same horsepower.  The engine's output and performance are increased, its power is constant over a wide usage range and it maintains a high degree of acoustic comfort.

In this way the engine reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions up to 25% while preserving optimal driving pleasure.

The optimised design of this engine comes in two versions, normally aspirated and turbo-charged, sharing 40% of common parts. The turbo-compressed version which is available in two engine power specifications - the 1.2L PureTech 110 S&S and the 130 S&S - won the Engine of the Year award for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 in its category.

Powerful while combining efficiency and driving pleasure, these engines are part of PEUGEOT's promise to provide new rewarding and stimulating driving experiences.



Naturally Aspirated Variants

More compact, the PureTech naturally aspirated 3-cylinder engine reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to a 4-cylinder engine with the same power.

Versions Available:

  • 1.0l PureTech 50kW (5-speed manual)
  • 1.2l PureTech 60kW (5-speed manual)

Turbocharged Variants

The 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is developed from the naturally aspirated version but adds a new generation high-performance turbo offering superb low engine speed torque. The PureTech 3-cylinder turbocharged engine reduces fuel consumption and emissions of C02 by up to 21% compared to the 4-cylinder engine of the same power.
