Petrol engines
The THP engine:
The 110 kW 1.6-litre THP (Turbo Height Pressure) engine, 16v, launched on the 207, introduced a new family of petrol engines equipped with innovative techonolgies.
Production is performed in the PSA Peugeot Citroën plant of Douvrin, in France.
This 1.6-litre engine is a 4-cylinder 1598 cc with a maximum power of 110 kW at 5800 rpm. It has a sixteen-valve cylinder head with two overhead camshafts. The reason for the technical choice of a 4-cylinder 1.6-litre engine is that small turbocharged engines, having a high specific power, offer a significant advantage in terms of fuel consumption by comparison with conventional normally aspirated engines of larger capacity. This strategy of downsizing (reduction in engine capacity) is similar to that applied in the area of the Brand's HDi diesels.
This new petrol engine therefore has highly innovative technological equipment, capable of providing the 207, for example, with a verve and driving pleasure worthy of engines of higher capacity. Its high performance levels testify to this. With only the driver in the car, 29.4 s are sufficient to travel 1000 m from a standing start, with only 8.2 s in the fifth gear for acceleration from 80 to 120 kph (by comparison, the 206 V16, despite a weight advantage, achieved a time of 10.1 s). The maximum speed of 210 kph is achieved on the test track in fifth gear.
The technologies used for this engine and their consequences for torque availability at low engine speed economise fuel consumption (7.0 litres in combined cycle versus 7.7 litres for the 206 V16) and limit CO2 emissions (166 g/km versus 185 g/km in the 206).
The current THP range:
-1.6-litre 110 kW available on 207 CC Sport 2 and 308 XT
-1.6-litre 128 hp available on 207 GTi
The VTi engine:
The two VTi engines, 1.6-litre (88 kW) and 1.4-litre (65 kW) are also two new engines full of innovative technologies.
The 88 kW 1.6-litre VTi engine (Variable Valve Lift and Timing injection), launched on the 207, is an indirect injection normally aspirated engine having a maximum power of 88 kW at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 160 Nm at 4250 rpm. This torque is available very uniformly, because at low engine speeds (2000 rpm) it already reaches 140 Nm, or 88% of the maximum torque, thus ensuring a broad engine speed range.
The technological content of this engine, very different from the 1.6-litre THP, from which it nevertheless carries over a large number of shared features, represents a veritable first at this capacity level. In addition to its VVT engine timing system (Variable Valve Timing) on the inlet and exhaust camshafts, a variable inlet valve raising system allows their maximum travel to be adjusted gradually depending on the force applied to the accelerator pedal (based on the VALVETRONIC concept of BMW Group). These two VVT systems combined with the variable inlet valve raising system in the end improve the thermodynamic efficiency of a petrol engine while significantly lowering its fuel consumption (especially in partial load phases), hence CO2 emissions, and also ensures more spontaneous response for greater engine flexibility.
This engine thus provides the 308 with appreciable vitality while maintaining a fuel consumption of only 6.7 litres per 100 km in combined cycle (i.e. a more than 10% gain by comparison with a 307 equipped with the old 110 hp 1.6-litre engine).
The current VTi range:
-1.6-litre VTi 88 kW available on 207 XS and 308 X-Line and XS.
-1.4-litre VTi 65 kW available on 207.
