At Peugeot's initiative, Operation Carbon was launched in 1989 on the 10,000 hectares or so of Fazenda Sao-Nicolau. Since its creation, the carbon sinks aim to store 2 million tonnes of carbon, or 7.32 million tonnes of CO2 each year and to promote biodiversity, through the study of more than 30 native species. Materialisation of this project required 10 million euros of funding by the carmaker, which enabled the creation of 100 seasonal jobs.
