HDI DPFS Engines
The HDi DPFS engine, a technical benchmark
Inaugurated on the 607 in 2000 as a world first, the diesel particulate filter system has become a benchmark throughout the world. It has been gradually deployed on a large proportion of Peugeot's HDi diesel engines. The HDi DPFS engine offers the driver many benefits.
Fuel economy
The HDi engine reduces fuel consumption.
Consuming less fuel than previous diesel engines, HDi allows more complete combustion. Thanks to the very-high-pressure injection (up to 1800 bar) of the common rail system, the extremely fine spraying of diesel fuel, constant and well distributed, permits more uniform and more complete combustion, giving improved efficiency.
Improved performance
With the HDi engine, new prospects are available to the driver.
By comparison with the prior-generation engines, HDi engines have excellent thermodynamic efficiency and far better performance. Acceleration is also easier as of low engine speeds thanks to the very high engine torque, and is available over a broad engine speed range. This also ensures greater safety for overtaking and offers a more flexible driving style to provide unmatched driving pleasure.
Reduced greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon which makes life on earth possible, the gases contained in the atmosphere such as CO2 absorbing the infrared rays emitted by the sun. The greenhouse effect can be modified if the atmosphere contains an excessive quantity of CO2 (link to Peugeot Universe) which cannot be absorbed by photosynthesis: the climate on the planet warms up.
The HDi engine provides a fuel consumption saving of more than 20% by comparison with an old-generation diesel engine, which is reflected directly by an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions, i.e. a reduction in greenhouse gases.
Moreover, since the HDi engine can accept up to 30% of biodiesel, it allows and even greater reduction in CO2 emissions. The combination of the HDi engine and biodiesel (for the time being reserved for corporate fleets) therefore represents a very important path for progress to reduce automotive CO2 emissions.
Improved sound insulation
The HDi engine offers the driver improved sound insulation.
Thanks to the very high-tech injection system allowing multiple injection, the HDi engine pre-injects fuel, which can smooth out combustion noise and attenuate sources of vibrations for improved passenger acoustic comfort.
