Questions relating to all Diesel Peugeot models
What are the advantages and disadvantages of lower-sulphur diesel?
HDI = High pressure Direct Injection
Peugeot has worked ceaselessly over the past decades to develop its reputation as the worlds leading manufacturer of diesel engines. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Peugeot should have used the latest Common Rail technology to create a high-pressure direct-injection motor known as the HDI.
HDI: Under this system, the fuel is injected under high pressure directly into the combustion chamber. The HDI badge, therefore, identifies both this new type of engine and those cars in the Peugeot diesel range that are equipped with the HDI system.
The first model in the Peugeot range to incorporate HDI technology is the 406. The HDI engine is available on other Peugeot vehicles worldwide but only available on 207, 308 and 407 Coupe in South Africa.
How does a diesel engine differ from a petrol engine?
A diesel engine is a compression ignition engine and a petrol engine is a spark ignition engine. A petrol engine takes in a mixture of gas and air, compresses it and ignites the mixture with a spark while a diesel engine takes in just air, compresses it and then injects fuel into the compressed air, the moment the diesel fuel is injected into the compressed air combustion takes place..
What are the advantages and disadvantages of lower-sulphur diesel?
The potential advantage of low sulphur are extended oil drainage intervals as well as slightly lower emissions. The potential disadvantages are less power, lower economy and fuel system lubricity problems.
Will sulphur levels be expected to decrease in future?
Low sulphur diesel will have to adhere to the following specifications in future: 2006:500ppm 2008: 50ppm optional as a niche fuel 2010: 50ppm standard
What are the advantages of using diesel versus petrol?
Diesel engine is more efficient giving more kilometres to a litre of fuel. However, the service intervals for diesel cars are shorter than the services on petrol vehicles.
Why is diesel no longer regarded as a "dirty" fuel?
Diesel used to be regarded as a “dirty” fuel and this was borne by the fact that black smoke from the exhaust was a common sight. The recent claims about dirty or poor diesel have been to address two factors which are lubricant and sulphur but the other main culprit is contamination. It is estimated that some 66% of all solid contaminants are introduced to the fuel between the bowser pump and the vehicle engine by improper filling practices, no cap on the fuel tank, no filter on the tank breather, inadequate fuel filtration on the vehicle and doubtful maintenance practices.
