A message from the Chairman
The automobile figures prominently in a broad range of social, economic and environmental concerns expressed in modern societies. As a responsible global corporate citizen, PSA Peugeot Citroën is actively developing and implementing real-world solutions to address these concerns by supporting sustainable mobility.
Appointed Chairman of the Managing Board on February 6, 2007, I soon realized how truly innovative this Group is, not only technologically, but also in social responsibility issues. Two of our competitive strengths are a sustainable development strategy anchored in the long-term and our employees’ commitment to finding practical responses to automobile issues.
Improving automotive fuel efficiency and attenuating the greenhouse effect remain the most important challenges. Reflecting our active involvement, we are currently Europe’s leading manufacturer of low-emissions vehicles, with 38% of the market for cars emitting less than 120 grams of CO2 per kilometer. We intend to continue making a decisive contribution, in particular to meeting the ambitious objectives set by the European Commission. In this regard, it is essential that we maintain the ability of compact cars to deliver the efficient mobility services people expect.
2006 saw the implementation of several projects designed to support our stakeholders.
Employees in all our operations worldwide will benefit from the Global Corporate Social Responsibility Agreement signed in March with the International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) and the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF), representing 85 unions. Translated into 21 languages, the Agreement has been ratified in the 10 countries where we employ more than 500 people.
Suppliers have been asked to comply with our social responsibility and environmental standards, which have been formally codified. At a time when we are expanding quickly outside Western Europe, this represents an important new phase in our purchasing strategy.
In the area of road safety, not only have our cars earned excellent ratings in Euro NCAP impact tests, but PSA Peugeot Citroën is the only carmaker in the world to have succeeded in widely deploying an emergency call system (which was recently certified by France’s rescue services authority).
This fourth online sustainable development report demonstrates our constant commitment to improving the quality of our reporting, with a more effective presentation of our policies, indicators and related objectives, and to transparency, with the application this year of the Global Reporting Initiative’s new G3 guidelines.
Thanks to the skills and dedication of our teams, the Group will continue to improve in 2007.
